Gov.om Design System: Building a Unified Digital Experience for the Oman Government
Designing a National, Arabic-First Design System for Government at Scale
What we noticed
While building six new components for GOV.OM DS 2.0 (Data Table, Flyout, Add Row, Credit Card Payment, Address, Civil ID), we discovered a deeper workflow issue.
Components were:
• Recreated across ministries
• Duplicated in multiple variants
• Named inconsistently
• Structured manually
• Slow to hand off to development
Complex components like Data Tables required up to:
4 working days in design
5 working days in development
The problem wasn't design quality.
The problem was system architecture.
Scaling Design Consistency Across Government
The gov.om Design System enables ministries to design and deliver services faster while maintaining a consistent, accessible, and Arabic-first user experience.
Through hands-on collaboration, training, and ongoing reviews, I helped ministries adopt the system confidently and apply it correctly to real services. The design system continues to evolve as a shared foundation for government digital services, supporting long-term scalability, collaboration, and quality across the Oman government.
Designing a National, Arabic-First Design System for Government at Scale
The gov.om Design System is the foundation for how digital government services are designed and built across the Oman government, with a strong emphasis on Arabic-first experiences.
I have been working on the design system for the past 2.5 years, contributing from its early foundations through to expansion and adoption. As the Arabic-speaking designer on the project, I helped shape components, patterns, and interactions to work natively in Arabic while remaining scalable across ministries with varying levels of design and technical maturity.
My work included building and expanding components, maintaining the system during key phases, and ensuring consistency across multiple platforms and services. I also trained and supported over 10 ministries, guiding teams on how to correctly use the design system and reviewing their implementations to maintain quality and alignment.
